Exhausting Haiti's Forests
Harvested and dried saplings are piled outside a bakery that is fueled solely by wood in the mountains near Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The fact that most of the wood being burned comes from saplings demonstrates that all the larger trees were harvested long ago. Wood and charcoal account for 70 percent of the energy in Haiti.
