Deforestation

Exhausting Haiti's Forests
A boy stops to rest while carrying a load of carrots to market in the mountains near Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Carrots are one of the most widely planted crops in the region because they can produce two crops a year. This frequent disturbing of the soil encourages erosion in a region that has already been heavily deforested. Although many of the poor understand that their farming practices are destroying the environment, they must decide between saving the land for future generations and feeding their families today.
