
Fueling the Fire: Charcoal Production in Haiti
Deforestation and subsequent erosion was a contributing factor to thousands of deaths in Gonaives, Haiti when flash floods from Tropical Storm Jeanne inundated the city on Sept. 18, 2004. To flee the city, residents had to wade through more than a mile of floodwater. The storm killed about 2,000 in the area of Gonaives and left hundreds of thousands homeless.
