Fueling the Fire: Charcoal Production in Haiti
Steep slopes and deforestation created a deadly combination as they funneled heavy rains into Fond Verettes, Haiti where flash floods and mudslides scoured the town in May 2004. About 2,000 people were killed in the border region. Widespread deforestation, mainly to make charcoal, in Haiti and along the border in the Dominican Republic is a major contributing factor to the frequent flash floods and the rising death toll.
