Trapped by Invisible Barriers
A bible flutters in the breeze atop a house in Jimani, Dominican Republic, where some flood victims survived by waiting and praying on their rooftops. Heavy rains in May 2004 brought flash flooding and mudslides to Jimani and other towns along the border with Haiti. About 2,000 people were killed in the border region. Widespread deforestation, mainly to make charcoal, in Haiti and along the border in the Dominican Republic is a major contributing factor to the frequent flash floods and the rising death toll.
